Disappointed as I am not to be included on this esteemed list from Political Scrapbook, I would like to be the first ‘lefty’ to speak out against the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
Frankly, the international community, under US leadership, went about the 21st Century all wrong. Using the rhetoric of a “war on terror”, we made the tragic events of 9/11 into a declaration of war. A war against a ghost.
Instead, a strategy emphasising cooperation with international policing regimes – the ICC, Interpol, upholding international law – would have turned the “War on Terror” to the “Policing of Terror”. America is often accused of being the world’s policeman but this isn’t right – it’s a vigilante.
If we’d have treated bin Laden like the criminal he is/was, then we need not have escalated into two major wars. We could have pressured governments into cooperating via the UN, funded and trained police and judges in their fight against terrorism abroad, and denied Al Qaeda a valuable source of propaganda.
According to this – bin Laden should have gone on trial. Not been shot. The man was a criminal, an orchestrator of a terrorist attack, and deserved to be treated as such. Tried by a jury of his peers, found guilty, and locked away, never to lead, or to become a martyr, ever again.
